Please share the ATTACHED list of "Focus Questions" (see below) with our NAUW Branch Presidents in your section and request that the Presidents forward their Branch responses to the National Position Paper Committee member in your Section for review and summarization.

“Embracing Our Roots: Celebrating a Century of NAUW Service”

Overview

  • As the Nation nears the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century, the National Association of University Women begins the Centennial Celebration of its founding in Washington, D.C. On this historic occasion, it is appropriate to reflect on the tremendous fortitude and vision embraced by our founders and epitomized by the tradition of service that has evolved over the past 100 years.

  • “Like an oak tree with its many branches,” we are reaching out for your assistance in sharing the stories of our NAUW heritage by revisiting the history of our “many Branches” to trace our “NAUW ROOTS.”

Please share the legacy of your Branch or Section. Tell us “your story” of perseverance and endurance by responding to the following questions:

Focus Questions

  • Who are the Charter Members of your Branch or Section and how did they inspire others to support the National Association of University Women?

  • Briefly describe the social and professional climate that prevailed when your Branch or Section was chartered.

  • How did your family or extended family contribute to your desire to participate in a community service organization such as the National Association of University Women?

  • What role did mentors or other role models in your community play in inspiring you to become a civic-minded individual?

  • List some of the challenges encountered in sustaining your commitment to NAUW ideals and our legacy of service.

  • What are some of the factors that influence the role that NAUW members play in cultivating our roots (i.e, as parents, grandparents/extended family, inter-generational learners, technology, inter-personal relationships, etc.)?

  • Are there other issues related to our heritage as an organization that you feel should be addressed in this study?
