REFLECTIONS ON A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP:  DR. DOROTHY HEIGHT
by Dr. Virginia C. Hathaway
National NAUW Position Paper Committee Chair

Dr. Height

As our beloved National Association  of University Women prepares to celebrate its Centennial Anniversary this year in Washington, D.C., we pause to honor the memory of  the legendary Civil Rights Icon, Chair and President Emerita of the renowned National Council of Negro Women, Dr.  Dorothy Height.

NAUW is a proud affiliate of NCNW, and Dr. Height's phenomenal leadership in empowering women and minorities throughout local communities and national spheres has inspired millions over the past eight decades.  During one of her visits to Los Angeles, I had the privilege of greeting Dr. Height in behalf of our NAUW Culver City Branch during a reception in  her honor which included a book-signing event for her acclaimed memoir, Open Wide the Freedom Gates, at the California African American Museum in Exposition Park, the setting for the photo which accompanies this reflection.   It was a moment that I shall always treasure!
